Best of Cyber Therapy, Season 1

by

Too many security shows focus on the latest breach or the tech involved. While those shows are great for infosec professionals, it’s not great for people outside of the field to spark an interest in infosec. So Tyler Shields and I embarked on an adventure to showcase the wide variety of personalities, skills, and motivations that contribute to the hard work in keeping organizations secure.

Cyber Therapy started out as an unnamed security show that looked at the people in security - their likes and dislikes, their career journeys, their challenges and triumphs. And now, season 1 is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify!

Here are the top 5 episodes from season 1, based on total views to date.

#5 - Meet the Hosts

Honestly, I’m quite surprised this was in the top 5. Most podcast advice today says to dive into the meat and provide value up front, yet this episode felt quite the opposite of that advice.

This was our first livestream ever. We had no one lined up as a guest.

We didn’t have a name.

We didn’t do any promotion of the episode.

And we barely had any premeditated flow.

It ended up just being a fun conversation between co-hosts.

So if you want to start a video podcast, don’t overthink it. Obviously, do your research and give some thought as to what you want your focus to be, but the most important thing is to start. Then you can reflect, iterate, and improve as you go!

#4 - Kirsty Paine chats about the toughest part of digital transformation projects

Kirsty Paine is a Strategic Advisor for Technology and Innovation at Splunk. She started her career in applied mathematics and got to do some cool (classified) stuff at the UK NCSC, which is the UK’s version of the NSA in America. She eventually pivoted to work on digital transformation projects and has plenty of advice to offer folks who are confronting the hardest part of transformation - people.

Get her tips on how to influence non-security professionals, especially when it comes to massive cross-departmental projects!

#3 - Daniel Miessler chats about building an interdisciplinary community

Daniel Miessler is the creator, founder, and CEO of Unsupervised Learning. He has a long history of learning and sharing his knowledge as a security professional.

The Unsupervised Learning community started off as a blog back when blogging was just picking up speed. He started memorializing his learnings into blogs and tutorials that could be shared with others who were looking to learn the same things. It eventually grew into a Slack community, newsletter, and podcast where Miessler and community members contribute interesting articles, books, and resources for security and non-security topics.

Hear more about Miessler’s journey from industry professional to running the Unsupervised Learning community full-time in episode 17 of Cyber Therapy.

#2 - Coleen Shane chats about developing her voice on social media and finding community in infosec

Coleen Shane is a Senior Network Engineer who experienced her first Hacker Summer Camp in 2019. Through this experience, she not only developed her voice on social media, she found lifelong friends through the Twitter #infosec community (back when that was still a thing).

Take a trip through a Hacker Summer Camp first-timer’s experience by tuning into episode 15 on Cyber Therapy!

#1 - Jason Chan, aka Chanlander, chats about ethics and burnout

Jason Chan shares his decades of experience in security, especially as the former VP of Security at Netflix. An ultramarathoner and cat-lover, Jason talks about the early days of security work, vetting the ethics of hiring candidates, and dealing with burnout.

He is now a retiree doling out dad jokes on LinkedIn. Check out episode 10 of Cyber Therapy to find out why Jason is also known as Chanlander!
